Hello & Bienvenidos —

I am Alham Rodriguez.

I was born in Zacatecas, Mexico and came to the United States when I was two years old. I was raised in Watsonville, California and I continue to call Watsonville my home. I feel extremely grateful and happy to serve as a Bilingual (Spanish and English) Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist in the community where I was raised. I began my professional education at California State University, Fresno where I obtained a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology. I then continued my education at the California State University, Fresno where I obtained a Master’s degree in Counseling with a concentration in Marriage and Family Therapy. I then went on to attend Oregon State University where I obtained a Doctorate degree in Teacher and Counselor Education. Since then, I have had over 11 years of experience offering mental health and counseling services in diverse settings. I have worked in community mental health agencies offering counseling services to children, adolescents and their families. I have also worked as a Family Therapist with children and families involved in the foster care system. I have provided mental health and counseling services in a Behavioral Health Department as a part of an outpatient clinic. Lastly, I have worked in private practice, with children, adolescents and adults, for the past two years.

"I'm inspired by the people I meet in my travels- hearing their stories, seeing the hardships they overcome, their fundamental optimism and decency. I'm inspired by the love people have for their children. And I'm inspired by my own children, how full they make my heart. They make me want to work to make the world a little bit better. And they make me want to be a better man."

- Barack Obama

Approach

"If you must look back, do so forgivingly. If you must look forward, do so prayerfully. However, the wisest thing you can do is be present in the present...Gratefully."

- Maya Angelou

My approach to practice is tailored to the individual needs and style of each client.

My style is authentic, attentive, warm, yet playful and humorous. I strive to provide a safe and non-judgmental atmosphere where you can feel heard and understood. I enjoy working from an integrated approach that is person-centered, mindfulness-based, and rooted in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT). In Cognitive Behavioral Therapy we seek to explore and understand one’s thoughts, feelings, and behavior so that changes in one’s behavior and thinking patterns lead to changes in emotions. A mindfulness approach supports in this process because it provides a variety of techniques designed to achieve and maintain a level of consciousness and awareness of the current moment in a way that is accepting and non-judgmental.

I specialize in working with children. My approach with children is play-based, art-based, and toy-based. It is through therapeutic play and art that children are able to play out, express, and work through, their experiences, feelings, and thoughts in a developmentally appropriate manner. Therefore, the therapeutic play and art provide an opportunity for children to learn new skills, feel better, and change their behavior across-settings.
